Single-phase AC motors
Single-phase AC motors (capacitor motors)
Power range from 1 to about 300 watts. These capacitor motors are particularly suitable for drives that are supplied directly from the 230V mains. By using specially designed squirrel-cage rotors, a safe starting of the motors is ensured.
Advantage over shaded pole motors:
- Better efficiency
- Change of direction is possible simply by interchanging two lines.
Advantage over universal motors:
- Longevity
- Quietness
- No sparking in the engine
The single-phase motors listed in the following overview can be manufactured for short-time operation (S2 mode) and intermittent operation (S3 mode) with significantly higher power and torque values. Depending on the version, the single-phase motors achieve IP40 to IP54 protection due to the closed design. Higher degrees of protection up to IP65 can be manufactured on request.
Standard connection voltage is 230VAC 50Hz, all motors are also available for special voltage applications.

Special features when using the single-phase motor
The picture on the left shows the typical speed-torque relationship for a single-phase motor depending on the rotor potting material:
The tightening torque MA is typically smaller in these motors than the overturning moment MK. Nominal speed (nN), rated torque (MN) and overturning moment (MK) are always higher when using pure aluminum rotors than when using alloy rotors. However, these are still preferred in many cases, because they provide a higher torque. On request, some dematek types can be supplied with both rotor variants.
To increase the tightening torque, a starting capacitor can also be switched in parallel to the operating capacitor for a short time. However, three-phase motors or brushless DC motors are more suitable for applications under difficult starting conditions.
Typical rated speeds for connection to the 50 Hz or 60 Hz network are:
2-pole | 4-pole | 8-pole | |
50 Hz | 2600 / min | 1300 / min | 600 / min |
60 Hz | 3200 / min | 1600 / min | 750 / min |
